To mark the centenary of the first English Women’s Institute meeting, we staged a mini-festival and exhibition at the Hive in Worcester in November 2015, detailing the rise of the WI movement, and the part it played in the development of opportunities for women both nationally and in Worcestershire.

Staged at the Hive in Worcester, it also formed part of the nationwide Being Human Festival of the Humanities and the Worcestershire World War 100 programme – a four-year programme of events and activities commemorating the role Worcestershire played in WWI .

The exhibition and events in the Hive, largely put together by Prof Andrews, students from the University of Worcester and Worcestershire County Council Archives Services, including an evening lecture by Prof Andrews to coincide with the launch of her recently revised book, The Acceptable Face of Feminism – The Women’s Institute as a Social Movement (2015, Lawrence & Wishart); workshops by community historian Jenni Waugh on how to research your WI and how to preserve its archive; and a day of WI events including performances from the WI  county drama group, Country Market stalls and a WW1 Bake-Off.

The Worcester News published an article about the festival.
